Did you make it to the Block on Sunday?

"The Reggae Block Party was conceived as a way for Sydney reggae musicians and DJs to show support for the local Redfern community and to help raise awareness for the Aboriginal Housing Company’s Pemulway Project."

The last one a few months back was rained out, and after a scorching blue Saturday, the clouds seemed to be gathering especially again for this one - nevertheless there was a good turn out, and a suprising number of friends.

There was a real moment, when The Ressurectors were joined by Wire MC and Chu Chu (?) for their final jam down. The rain had eventually worked its way in, but by then we were all on our feet - and for a while there, the band had the whole place writhing in the palm of their hand.

The whole affair could have only been made more memorable by "Nynginar" (?) - the Mayor Of Redfern, taking the stage for an impromptu performance of his "spiritual dance"...

It's good to see Wire MC getting back in the business. I've heard he's been working with some new producers, and I swear someone played a new track on Koori Radio a month or two back that was absolutely booming!

Here's something I've heard Wire do a couple of times recently. Sunday's rendition came with a Didg player on the side and Wire seemed to call upon a lot more of what's inside him for it. This rip's from Radio National's Late Night Live earlier this year. Phillip Adams brought Wire in on reccomendation from George Gittoes, who described him as the "most important musician in Australia today".

Gurindji Blues

Gurindji Blues was written by the white country singer Ted Egan, and recorded in 1971 by Egan and Galarrwuy Yunupingu.

Ted Egan says that he was moved to write Gurindji Blues after he heard Peter Nixon, who was then Minister for the Interior, say in parliament that if the Gurindji wanted land, they should save up and buy it, like any other Australian.

Will be playing another set in the coming week at Uber Lingua and I'll admit to being little anxious about it - not that I'm one to poke a stick, but being such a loaded date, I find it uneasy...the misanthrope inside me has pricked up its ears...hmm... what am I trying to say? Maybe I do want to poke a stick at it!

The ÜberLingua thing has been about tapping into some of the more curious "multicultural" musicial activities coming out this country. Apart from rubbing bouncy ragga mash ups, I've had an ear for street mixes, bedroom noise and Musique Concrete. Which is why on a local (or is that global?) level The League Of Infinite Justice appeals so much. Unfortunately off line at the mo', but hopefully the CD will be about for the Colonel's apprearances at Electrofringe
